Vombsänkan, where Flyinge is located, is the historic horse region in Sweden, and horses have been bred here from the middle ages. In 2009 Magnus Oskarsson and his partner purchased this property and people thought strangely of their desire to plant a vineyard in a region of horses. But since then some of the neighbours have started planting vines as well.
Magnus planted the first 1200 Solaris vines in 2009. This was after one of the pioneers of growing wine in Sweden, Murre Sofrakis, came here to have a look and give advice. He thought this would be a good spot for wine growing. Murre is the one who bought Solaris to Sweden, and with his wife Lena he runs the Vingården i Klagshamn vineyard south of Malmö.
The vines grew and nothing bad happened, it was a hot summer, but then in the following years Magnus began to worry that this is maybe not the best place for a vineyard. It’s low down, and there’s lots of groundwater, so he had to put a drainage system in place.
In 2019 the frost came. Magnus says that this was a shock after 2018, which was one of the best years in Sweden with sun every day until harvest. The next year was a tough experience, so now they have to use frostbusters and candles. Flyinge is located in the middle of Skåne so it lacks the moderating influence of the sea. The upside is that it’s warmer here and there isn’t too much wind, so in a good year they get very ripe grapes.
Now they have 2 hectares, with 9500 Solaris vines and 500 Rondo vines. He says that Solaris is a safe bet because you can make still or sparkling wine from it, so even a particularly cool year isn’t a massive problem.
The soil is clay and sand, with a 30 cm top soil layer. They spray just once or twice a year with sulfur. They are certified organic.
